As part of literacy, students will follow a center menu each week.  The menu will consist of centers to practice writing, word work, reading and target skills.  The menu allows the students to choose rotations throughout the week, while being responsible for their own learning.  Guided reading and rotation activities will be differentiated based on student needs.

  • LIT.5 1-3  Quote accurately from the text using explicit and inferred details when determining a theme, explaining a character's response to challenges, comparing and contrasting characters, settings and events, and when summarizing a text.  

  • LIT.5.6 Describe how a narrator's or speaker's point of view influences how events are described.    

  • LIT 5.9  Compare and contrast stories in the same genre on their approaches to similar themes and topics.      

  • IT 5.1-3  Quote accurately from the text using explicit and inferred details when determining two or more main ideas, when summarizing a text, and when explaining the relationship or interactions between two or more individuals, events or ideas in a historical, scientifc or technical text.   

  • W.5.4  Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.    

  • L.5.1  Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.    

  • L.5.2-CP Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization and punctuation when writing.

  • L.5.2-S  Know and apply the conventions of grade-level spelling when writing.

  • OW.5.1.1  Write opinion pieces on topics or texts by introducing a topic clearly, stating an opinion, creating a clear organizational structure, and providing a concluding statement or section.  

  • F.5.3  Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

  • F.5.4  Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

  • L.5.4-5  Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases, and demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings, based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
